All designs begin with good intentions. Design may be viewed as a process of selecting design features to meet a specific design intent. In some cases, design guidelines exist to aid this process, for example, ergonomic guidelines to improve the ease of physical interaction with products. For more emotional product qualities, however, no such guidelines exist. An important question is whether design intent is actually realized in the final design.
This presentation includes a case study in designing sounds. This demonstrates a method for measuring users' subjective experience of products. More specifically, the case study illustrates how to pinpoint specific product features that are associated with various dimensions of experience. Such associations provide a tool for designing products to create a specific desired experience in users.
Jim Kleiss has over 20 years of experience conducting user interface design research and usability testing in a variety of product domains including military flight simulators, advanced automotive electronics, computer software, web sites, telecommunications systems and consumer products. Jim has previously worked as a government researcher, a specialist in corporate environments and a consultant in the private sector. He has over 40 technical publications and presentations in the area of consumer- and user-centered product design. Jim's current focus is on product sensory quality. He has extensive experience collaborating with designers and engineers to improve the visual, auditory and tactile quality of products. Jim holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Rice University.
