This 1-day workshop with Carnegie Mellon professor John Zimmerman will give attendees hands-on experience with two novel design methods for generating ideas and getting user feedback. The morning will focus on crowdsourcing ideas and the afternoon will cover how to speed date new concepts.

Note: Since attendance is limited to 25, we are conducting two identical workshops, one on Thursday, October 24th and one on Friday, October 25th.

Crowdsourcing

The emergence of the social web and the meteoric adoption of smartphones have created more and more opportunities for products and services that use crowdsourcing. The workshop will provide an overview of many different crowdsourcing forms and motivational approaches to spur crowd action. Attendees will work in small teams to brainstorm and sketch concepts. Through a process of critique and discussion, they will collaboratively refine several concepts and render them as storyboards.

Speed Dating/

Observing current user behavior does not always provide guidance to how radically new products or services (driverless cars, intelligent environments, robotic sales agents) will be received and used. Speed dating provides a way to test these future waters. Workshop attendees will evaluate storyboards from the morning session using the speed dating method. Playing the roles of evaluator and participant, attendees will practice how to facilitate a session and draw insights from users. At the end of the “dates,” evaluators will ask their participants to share ideas for what kind of future they really want.

Audience/

This workshop is geared towards UX designers and researchers who want to learn methods for generating design ideas and evaluating them.

What to Bring: Your laptop.

Lunch will be provided.

About the Instructor
John Zimmerman is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment at Carnegie Mellon University’s HCI Institute and School of Design. He conducts research in four areas: (i) how to apply product attachment theory, which explains why people love their stuff, in the practice of user experience design; (ii) how people construct value with their ever-increasing collections of virtual things; (iii) how to use social computing to develop co-design systems that drive public service innovation; and (iv) how to design interactions with intelligent systems. John teaches courses in user experience design, service design, and HCI methods. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and has been awarded more than 30 patents. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, John worked for Philips Electronics conducting research on future interactive TV concepts for the home.
