Designing Interfaces for Physical/Digital Spaces

Gideon D’Arcangelo, VP of Creative Strategy for ESI Design in New York, will speak  about the design of human interfaces that bridge the physical and digital worlds.    ESI designs experiences that facilitate social interaction in public places such as museums, retail environments, city squares, historic sites, nature parks and, of course, online.  As experience designers, he and his colleagues regularly confront usability issues that range from the micro (what’s happening between the user and the interface?) to the macro (how does that interface fit into the whole picture of the user’s life?).  Effective communications design, he maintains, always considers the relationship between the user’s interactions and the context in which those interactions take place.  He will look at these ideas through recent ESI projects such as the Dream Cube at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo, Mercy Corps’ Action Center and the Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens.

Speaker Bio:

Gideon D’Arcangelo is an accomplished interactive designer, educator and a frequent speaker on design.  With a BA in Music with Honors from the University of Chicago, he worked with musicologist Alan Lomax prior to joining ESI, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors for Lomax’s Association for Cultural Equity.  He is a contributing producer for Public Radio International’s weekly arts and design program, Studio 360, and serves on the faculty at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program in the Tisch School of the Arts.  At ESI, he has played a crucial strategic leadership role in the design of the Hall of Human Life at the Museum of Science Boston, Ellis Island National Immigration Museum, INFINITY at NASA Stennis Space Center, new concept stores for Best Buy and the Reuters Spectacular at 3 Times Square.

ESI Design is one of the world’s foremost experience design firms and a pioneer at creating interactive environments that inspire people to build strong relationships with exceptional companies and institutions.
