Join us on February 11 as Jeff Harrison from Evantage Consulting talks about how user context can inform the design of data visualizations, and some things to think about when evaluating designs.

Data visualization is enjoying its day in the sun. Empowered by a widening array of what is possible, UI designers who at one time might have inserted [put graph here] placeholders into a wireframe are increasingly able to define what that graph should look like.

There is a lot of advice out there for the would-be visualizer. Many forums and blogs are dedicated to celebrating good charts and graphs, tearing apart bad ones, and trading best practices.

However, best practices are not enough. There is not one “right way” to visualize a data set. As with other kinds of interfaces, an effective display relies on an understanding not only of the data but of its users' context. And, to ensure that a visualization is understandable, useful, and credible, you'll probably want to show it to some people.
